A letter from Bishop Sean Rowe

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

The 77th General Convention of the Episcopal Church concluded yesterday in Indianapolis. During the last eight days of legislative business, we have passed a budget for 2013-2015, approved the formation of a task force that will work on restructuring the church, and considered many theological, pastoral, and social issues.

The headlines have been grabbed by General Convention's passage of one particular resolution: A049, which approves a provisional rite for blessing same sex unions. This rite and its accompanying resources are the result of a collaborative, churchwide process that has unfolded over the past three years and has included input from the House of Bishops and from leaders in this diocese.

For more than 30 years, The Episcopal Church has considered its response to the pastoral needs of lesbian and gay Christians. This General Convention's decision to authorize a trial rite for blessing same-gender unions recognizes the Holy Spirit at work in the committed, life-long unions of lesbian and gay people. Across our church, there are Episcopalians and other Anglicans who have been drawn further into fidelity and service to the world by living in committed same-sex partnerships based on holy love and the gift of seeing Christ in one another.

As you know from the letter I sent to you before General Convention, I support the step we have taken by authorizing a rite for blessing same sex unions, but other faithful Episcopalians do not. The Episcopal Church in Northwestern Pennsylvania is a place where people of good conscience can disagree about such matters. We respect and love each other and we are united in Christ, which is a bond stronger than any legislation or issue.

I will authorize the use of the new provisional rite for same sex blessings in the Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania, but no member of the clergy will be required to perform this rite. Between now and the first Sunday in Advent, which is the earliest date the approved rite may be used, I will consult with the Standing Committee to determine a process for congregational conversation, discernment, and reconciliation.

As I make my way home from Indianapolis, I look forward to talking with you about the work of the General Convention and to the path of discernment that we will travel together.

Chair scrubbing

In preparation for the Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, 10 March, we will scrub the the chairs in the Parish Hall and the Walker Room.

There are approximately 100 chairs to be cleaned. It will be wonderful if at least 10 people volunteer!

So far we have two machines. Can you provide another? 

Otherwise please bring a bucket, brush, sponge, gloves (if you prefer) and/or Resolve if you have them.

Lunch will be provided. Please bring your own preferred libation.

Ash Wednesday, 22 February 2012

There will be no noon eucharist on Ash Wednesday. The regular Ash Wednesday service will be at the accustomed time of 7:30 pm.

And after the Annual Meeting...

 We all, yes, all, gathered for lunch. We are a small parish but growing more and more healthy.

When it is a pot luck we seem to eat especially well.

Next week when the bishop is with us we will get four plus two new members. The plus two are Ace, left, and Manley, right. They may be even more popular than their charges who are very special people.

Annual Meeting Sunday, 29 January 2012

As has become our custom, the Annual Meeting will be held after the eucharist in the church followed by lunch in the Parish Hall. Bring something edible to share.

Midweek eucharists

The Wednesday eucharist will be at 5:30 pm on 4 January 2012 and all first Wednesdays of the month. There will be supper during the discussion this week. The noon (12:05) eucharists will continue on subsequent Wednesdays.

On Friday, 6 January 2012, the eucharist will be celebrated in the church at 12:05 as the three wise men arrive with their gifts for the baby Jesus.

Wednesdays eucharists are in the Walker Room. Use the Parish House entrance from the parking lot.

Lessons and Carols 2011

The choir hangs out in the sacristy before Lessons and Carols. Tough to keep us quiet.

The acolytes wait too.

The choir was augmented by two Presbyterians and one member who can't sing regularly. Our priest sings also.

We are a traditional Episcopal parish. Organ and flute today. No guitars or drums. Ever. We sing the liturgy and the psalm too at the 10:00 am service.

The nine lessons were read by various people. Between each lesson, with two exceptions, there was an anthem by the choir and a hymn. The congregation gets to sing 11 hymns, I think. The choir sings those and this year only seven anthems. 

It was nice to see parish people attending. Sometimes there are more visitors than members. Urging from the pulpit seems to help.

There was a lovely reception afterward and nearly all stayed and talked and stayed and talked...
